Cherokee Park lower unit SWA report
Hi Ron,
I was glad to find your report of the area plus the info about the Elliot Homestead. I've been hiking the Lone Pine drainage several times per year for the last 10 years and wanted to expand my territory.
Today 3/21/09 I hiked to Elliot ranch plus a bit west then reversed and went downstream looking for the "one room schoolhouse." It is indeed a 1 room building. Log construction, wood floor. S facing door, West and East facing tall windows. Can't really prove schoolhouse though. Coords are: N40.82051 W105.33635
My day was much like your picture. Dry grass, blue skies, no leaves or green out yet. Saw one small, cold, slow rattler and some ducks. No deer. Cattle grazing north of the Rabbit Creek trailhead parking.
Since the DOW says if you aren't hunting or fishing between Sept and May to stay out - I carry my fishing license and 4 pc fly rod. Middle Rabbit creek might have some fish during runoff when they can migrate from upstream but in March - no. But I'm legal!
Hope you can get back to the area to finish exploring.

I just discovered your website and am very impressed. My husband and I were checking through our hiking books to find a new hike in our area, and we thought the North Fork Trail looked interesting. I decided to also check the Internet to see if I could find additional information about the trail. I read that it passes into RMNP and we plan to hike with our two dogs. I wasn't sure how far we could hike with them, and the book definitely didn't provide this information. However, your website did let us know how far we can hike with our dogs.
Thank you for providing such a useful website. If we get any interesting photos I will share them with you.
Sincerely,
Meredith and Mike
